a pretty cool space reveal: pasadena studio by caroline lee + anne sage

June 18, 2018

In case you didn’t catch the Design*Sponge feature last week,  after long, long last.. it is finally time to reveal the new studio space that Anne and I have been working on for my sister, Margaret, and so I give you, A Pretty Cool Space!

Margaret + her husband, Corey, got the keys to this little studio space back in January, and it was a bit of a doozy of a space.. [see: the time-lapse video that shows the entire transformation process]. But, if you know anything about Anne + me, we’re a bit notorious for seeing derelict spaces and getting harebrained ideas within seconds. They kind of go hand-in-hand, really. [see: Light Lab]

OK, so step one is to talk about the glorious ceiling. It’s kind of the WOW factor of the space, and so we called upon the magic of Portola Paints and their colors: El Mirage, Ancient Scroll, Angel’s Landing, Limelight, Drizzle, One Drop, Mission Rose, Pink Pepper, Charlotte, Canggu, Lighthouse, Troubadour, Ghost Tree. Anne spent hours tirelessly creating this paint by number chart, and then Margaret spent over 60 hours painting it square by square, all by herself. She was so committed to it being perfect that she wouldn’t accept anyone else’s support. So. She literally did it herself. NUTS! And AMAZING! All at once.

Next, let’s move onto that WOW WALL of drapes! We had them custom made from fabric by our v-faves, Crypton Home, and, then Danae of Folia Collective curated the most perfect selection of plants to pair with the space. It really feels like Christmas to stand in this room. I cannot tell a lie.

But wait! There’s more. The Drop It Modern wallpaper in Shape Shifter Mural: Creme is a show stopper. I mean, when we ordered it, they asked us if we were sure that we’d done the math correctly because we ordered sooooo much. And, while it’s only a one-room studio, it’s still huge, so yeah. It covers a LOTTA space. And it is glorious. The walls were a gross cinderblock BLICK, and so the sticky/removable wallpaper is the kind of thing that every magician wishes they could have in their tool kit.
The Messina Console from West Elm is a spot that we envision Margaret + Corey could turn into a mini bar cabinet, if needed. I mean, this space is so cool… why wouldn’t you host cocktail events there with your friends?!

[Oh hi there, Nessie!]

All of the bright, pop’y furniture is from Article… like their Kits Pacific Blue Sofa, these Embrace Rose Pink Chairs and the Orbis Blush Pink Ottomans. They feel luscious and succulent and I just NEED to find a way to get those ottomans in my house, too! How good are they?!

Three identical Kaya Book Shelves from Urban Outfitters are additional moments of WOW, if you ask me. Not to mention Anne’s styling of them. She’s just such a goodie to have on your team!

More Article goodness for ya! How about that Vitri Walnut Side Table, or the Basis rug from Jaipur Living?

Many of the smaller styling elements were pulls from ye olde Target, like the: terrazzo coastersceramic candlebrass bookendterrazzo traymarble clockterrazzo + wood sculpture

The angles of this room just keep on going! Next up, we didn’t want Margaret to have a boring ol’ desk for her studio/office space… Instead, why not incorporate the Seno Oak Dining Table for 6 from Article, paired with the Thonet stacking chairs from Amsterdam Modern and create a multiuse space? Meetings, editing, emails and dinner parties all in one?! Is this life just TOO GOOD?!

All artwork in the studio is Society6. Even the frames! Such beautiful work. Continuing to move counterclockwise around the room, we come to the front window, and this little moment.

Rather than get a credenza, that might be a little too low, we opted for the Greta 6-Drawer Dresser from West Elm. Ya gotta have some storage space in the room, and so these drawers are it!
Also, 100% of the lighting in the room is by Mitzi, including the Leah floor lamp, the Petra table lamp, the Zena console lamp, and all of the Estee ceiling fixtures.

When a space is this small, ya gotta use every last inch! Here, we paired 3 Sparkler Wall Mirrors from West Elm in a statement moment [or should I say, another statement moment] behind the door. These are kitty-corner from the three Urban Outfitters shelves, so it’s kind of a perfect balance.

Margaret + Nessie in their new space. [Margaret is @aprettycoolgirl on Insta, and Nessie is @aprettycooldog, so the studio name of A Pretty Cool Space just felt right.]

Nessie here just kills me! That side eye!

The fam bam. Margaret + Corey work together as … wait for it … Margaret + Corey.

Anne, Margaret + myself… I mean. How effing lucky am I to have these ladies in my life as co-creators and friends and family?!

Last, but certainly not least, this custom neon sign from Brite Lite Tribe lights up the night sky and keeps Nessie looking a little bit pink… and when you’re a bit obsessed with pink, having a pink dog is the cherry on top 😉

Don’t miss this transformation video by Margaret + Corey:

Thanks so much for reading along… Anne + I are already brewing our next collab, so you’ll be hearing/seeing more from us soon! x
